Trimethyl[2,3-(dioleyloxy)propyl]ammonium chloride is an alveolar surfactant that is used in cancer gene therapy to deliver DNA into cells. It is a positively charged ion with an acyl chain of ten carbons that binds to the negatively charged DNA backbone. The uptake of this compound by cells occurs through endocytosis, where it enters the cell and dissociates into monomers. These monomers then bind to the DNA backbone and form a complex with dextran sulfate. The resulting acid complex is then taken up by primary cells, which have been loaded with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification products for gene expression. Trimethyl[2,3-(dioleyloxy)propyl]ammonium chloride has been shown to be effective in delivering DNA into human serum and tissue culture cells.
