Trimethylphenylammonium Bromide is a quaternary ammonium compound that is used as a biocide and disinfectant. It has been shown to be active against group P2 bacteria, such as Acinetobacter baumannii, by inhibiting the synthesis of acetylcholine. Trimethylphenylammonium Bromide also inhibits replication of DNA and RNA in bacteria, leading to cell death. This agent is commonly used in combination preparations with benzalkonium chloride for hospital surfaces and medical devices, such as urinary catheters. The chemical structure of this compound consists of a hydroxy group, an acetylcholine group and two hydroxyl groups. These properties make it useful for transport purposes because it can dissolve in both water and oil.
