2,3,5-Triphenyltetrazolium Bromide (TPTB) is a redox indicator that has been used to study microbial metabolism. It can be used as an indicator of lysis in staphylococcal cultures by chlorhexidine and monolayer underpinning. The redox potential of TPTB is reduced by dehydrogenase enzymes, which are found in many microorganisms. TPTB also acts as a substrate for the enzyme NADH-dehydrogenase, which is found in some plants and symbiotic rhizobia. This compound can be used to differentiate between uninfected and infected plant cells due to its ability to reduce the redox potential of uninfected plant cells.
