4,5,6,7-Tetrahydrothieno[3,2-c]pyridine is a hydrogen chloride salt that has potent inhibitory activity against bacterial growth. It was synthesized by reacting 4,5,6,7-tetrahydrothienopyridine with diazonium salt in the presence of sodium carbonate and hydrochloric acid. The resulting product has been shown to be an effective antimicrobial agent against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. This compound also inhibits platelet aggregation by binding to the active site of thromboxane A2 synthase (thromboxane synthase) which is necessary for converting arachidonic acid into thromboxane A2 and prostaglandins.
