Tetraphenyl-2-butyne-1,4-diol is a synthetic compound that has the ability to change color between blue and red depending on its environment. It is a ligand that binds to metal ions in coordination chemistry. Tetraphenyl-2-butyne-1,4-diol can be used as a photochromic dye for fabrics or plastics. The ligands are synthesized by Wittig reactions of hexacarbonyl compounds with arenes. Tetraphenyl-2-butyne-1,4-diol has been shown to have bathochromic properties and can be used for sectioning of biological samples for electron microscopy. Crystals of tetraphenyl-2-butyne 1,4 diol are centrosymmetric and have diffraction properties characteristic of an arene.
