Trifluoroborane is a chemical species that is used as a model system for studying reaction mechanisms. Trifluoroborane has hydroxyl groups, which can react with chlorine atoms to form bromides. The β-unsaturated ketones in aromatic hydrocarbons can react with trifluoroborane to form the corresponding β-unsaturated esters. Chemical stability was tested by exposing trifluoroborane to UV light and found that it does not degrade significantly. The structure of trifluoroborane was determined by gel chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, indicating that the molecule is linear with a central boron nitride group and two hydrogen atoms on each end.
