Tetrafluoroboric acid is a colourless, volatile liquid that is soluble in water. Tetrafluoroboric acid reacts with phosphorus pentoxide to produce hydrogen fluoride and tetrafluoroborate ions. Tetrafluoroboric acid has been used as a reducing agent for the analysis of phosphate anions. Tetrafluoroboric acid is also used to remove disulfide bonds in proteins and peptides. It may be used in biochemical studies as a buffer or to measure enzyme activities. The ionic form of tetrafluoroboric acid can be detected by X-ray crystal structures and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
