5,6,7,8-Tetrafluorocoumarin is a derivative of coumarin that reacts with hydrogen fluoride to form 5,6,7,8-tetrafluoro-4H-coumarin. This reaction is catalyzed by the addition of a catalyst such as copper(II) chloride. Pyrolysis of 5,6,7,8-tetrafluorocoumarin produces hydrogen fluoride and 3-(2'-hydroxyethyl)-4H-coumarin. The hydrogen fluoride can then react with 3-(2'-hydroxyethyl)-4H-coumarin to form 4H-coumarin. In this process the molecular ion is formed and an electron is transferred from the electron donor (3-(2'-hydroxyethyl)-4H-coumarin) to the electron acceptor (hydrogen fluoride).
