3-(Trifluoroacetyl)pyridine is a phosphoribosyl transferase inhibitor. It is an analog of nicotinamide that inhibits the enzyme phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate amidotransferase (PPAT). This enzyme catalyzes the conversion of nicotinamide mononucleotide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) to nicotinamide mononucleotide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP). 3-(Trifluoroacetyl)pyridine binds to PPAT and prevents it from transferring the phosphoryl group, inhibiting the production of ATP. The inhibition of PPAT by 3-(trifluoroacetyl)pyridine has been shown to be enzymatically competitive and reversible.
