2,3,3-Trifluoroacrylonitrile is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor. It is a polymerizable compound that can be used as an activated monomer. 2,3,3-Trifluoroacrylonitrile is processed into sodium salts for use in the production of polymers. This compound has been shown to polymerize with other compounds and form functional groups. 2,3,3-Trifluoroacrylonitrile is usually produced by the fluorination of acrylonitrile or acetylene followed by treatment with sodium chloride or magnesium chloride. The sodium salt of this compound can be produced by mixing 2,3,3-trifluoroacrylonitrile with sodium carbonate and then heating the mixture until the desired product forms.
