It is formed by the reaction of an organic compound with fluorine or chlorine and can be identified by its distinctive chemical shift in the proton NMR spectrum. 2,2,2-Trifluoroethyl radical is a reactive intermediate that has been shown to react with water vapor to form hydrogen fluoride and hydrochloric acid. This intermediate has also been shown to produce benzyl groups from phenoxy radicals and hydroxyl groups from alkoxys. Reactions involving this intermediate have been used in the synthesis of nitro compounds. 2,2,2-Trifluoroethyl radical has been shown to cause cancer in animals.
