3-Trifluoromethyl-DL-phenylalanine is a magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent that has been shown to have a hydrophobic, non-invasive and safe nature. It has an inhibitory effect on the production of proteins in brain tissue, which can be observed using magnetic resonance imaging. 3-Trifluoromethyl-DL-phenylalanine binds to proteins and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death. The mechanism of action is not yet fully understood.
