Trifluoroacetic acid is an organic chemical compound that belongs to the group of heterocycles. It is a colorless liquid with a boiling point of 107 °C. The molecule contains two trifluoromethyl groups, and is able to form salts with alkali metals and acids. Trifluoroacetic acid has been used in experiments as a lithiating agent, in which it reacts with lithium metal to produce lithium trifluoroacetate. This agent can also be used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other compounds. It has been shown that trifluoroacetic acid selectively hydrolyzes esters and diastereomers of methyl ketones, alcohols, and amines. The resulting products are optically active, which means they have different physical properties when viewed from different directions.
