Trimethylsulfonium tetrafluoroborate (TMF) is a substrate for the NS5B polymerase, which is the target enzyme of the antiviral drug ribavirin. TMF inhibits the catalytic activity of NS5B polymerase by binding to its active site and blocking access to the 3'-OH group of ribose, thus inhibiting viral RNA synthesis. TMF has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of cardiovascular disease, as well as a potential anti-inflammatory agent. The hydroxyl group on TMF reacts with lipids in cell membranes and results in reduced lipid levels. TMF is also a potent aromatic hydrocarbon that can bind c1-c6 alkoxy groups.
