Description:
5-(Trifluoromethyl)-1,3-Benzothiazole is a nitroaromatic compound that can be used to radiolabel other molecules. 5-(Trifluoromethyl)-1,3-Benzothiazole has been shown to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in mice. The compound binds to the mycobacterial cell membrane and inhibits the formation of an electron transport chain by complexing with cytochrome c oxidase. This prevents oxidation of molecular oxygen and therefore reduces the production of ATP, leading to cell death. 5-(Trifluoromethyl)-1,3-Benzothiazole also inhibits the growth of Mycobacterium avium complex and may be useful in treating infections caused by these bacteria.
