Triphenylsulfonium hexafluorophosphate is a reactive, redox-active compound that can be used in polymerization reactions. It has been shown to react with oxygen or nitrogen atoms and form disulfide bonds. Triphenylsulfonium hexafluorophosphate is also a good reducing agent and can reduce hydrogen fluoride to the hydrofluoric acid ion. The optical properties of triphenylsulfonium hexafluorophosphate are sensitive to its environment; it has an orange color in the solid state and is transparent in water. Triphenylsulfonium hexafluorophosphate also has a low light sensitivity and is used as a photoresist for semiconductor fabrication because it does not require exposure to UV radiation for photopolymerization. Hexafluorophosphate salts are also good polarizers of light, which makes them useful in optical applications such as lenses and filters.
