2,3,4,5-Tetrafluoro-6-nitrobenzoic acid (TFNA) is an amide that has been used for the synthesis of a number of fluorinated ciprofloxacin derivatives. TFNA can be synthesized by nitration of 2,3,4,5-tetrafluorobenzoic acid and subsequent reduction with sodium borohydride. This technique is useful to generate nitro groups in TFNA molecules. The physicochemical properties of TFNA are different from those of the parent compound 2,3,4,5-tetrafluoro-6-nitrobenzoic acid. TFNA binds to bacterial gyrase and inhibits DNA replication. It also inhibits the production of aldehydes by bacteria due to its nucleophilic nature. Finally, this compound is capable of inducing the dehydrogenation reaction at the nitro group in the presence of a reducing agent
