Description:

2,4,6-Tris(trifluoromethyl)benzoic acid is a monomeric compound that is soluble in chloroform and ether. It has been shown to have acidic properties. This acid can be used as a precursor for the synthesis of ferrocene. 2,4,6-Tris(trifluoromethyl)benzoic acid reacts with butyllithium in anhydrous ether to form a cyclic organometallic compound. This reaction is thermally driven and can be done at room temperature. The product of this reaction is structurally similar to ferrocene. Refluxing 2,4,6-Tris(trifluoromethyl)benzoic acid with metallocene provides a metallocene derivative with an additional trifluoromethyl group on the cyclopentadienyl ring.
