4-(Trifluoromethoxy)-benzoic acid methyl ester is a fluorescent probe that can be used to detect and measure amyloid plaques in the brain. It has been shown to have high affinity for beta-amyloid proteins, which are found in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease. This compound can bind to amyloid plaques and fluoresce, especially when excited by near infrared light. 4-(Trifluoromethoxy)-benzoic acid methyl ester can also be used as a stain for fibrillary tissue and as an indicator of transmissible encephalopathies.
