Tridecafluorononanoic acid is a fluorinated organic compound that is used as a solvent. It is an analog of cinnamyl alcohol, which is a natural product derived from the essential oil of cinnamon. Tridecafluorononanoic acid is also used to develop porous materials with optimized morphology and transport properties. The use of this compound as an additive for membranes has been shown to increase the transport rate. Tridecafluorononanoic acid can be synthesized by reacting perfluoroacetic acid with an alcohol in the presence of base. Tridecafluorononanoic acid has been shown to have three times the solvency power of octadecanoic acid, one of the most common carboxylic acids. This property makes it useful in solute-solvent interactions, such as binding hydrophobic molecules or carrying them through membranes.
