Ketoconazole is a synthetic, broad-spectrum antifungal agent that inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane. It has shown inhibitory effects against staphylococcus and candida glabrata. Ketoconazole also has antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In the treatment of tuberculosis it has been shown to be effective in inhibiting mycobacterium tuberculosis growth, but not Mycobacterium avium complex. Ketoconazole is used in the treatment of Candida albicans infections as well as other superficial fungal infections such as tinea pedis (athlete's foot).
