The synthesis of 1,1,1-trifluoro-methanesulfonic acid cerium salt (4:1) is an efficient method that can be used to synthesize a variety of compounds. This synthetic procedure is based on the reaction between chloroacetic acid, ammonium nitrate, trifluoromethanesulfonic acid and formylation with ethyl formate in acetonitrile at a temperature of 60°C. The resultant product can then be reacted with aldehydes or acetic anhydride to produce coumarin derivatives or epoxides respectively.
