Trifluoropyruvic acid is an aromatic hydrocarbon that is a reaction product of trifluoroacetic acid and pyruvic acid. The chemical structure of this compound is similar to that of β-unsaturated ketones, alkynes, and carbonyl compounds. Trifluoropyruvic acid inhibits enzymes in the cell nucleus, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the activity of hydroxylase enzymes. Trifluoropyruvic acid also has a strong inhibitory effect on the metabolism of fatty acids by inhibiting fatty acid synthase and other enzymes that are necessary for this process. Trifluoropyruvic acid reacts with phosphorus pentachloride and hydrochloric acid in water to form hydrogen fluoride and fluorine gas, which can be detected by electron spin resonance spectroscopy.
