Trichlorotrifluoroethanol (TCFE) is a monomer used in the production of coatings, optical waveguides, and other applications. TCFE is produced by the reaction of formaldehyde with hydrogen chloride gas. This reaction results in the formation of hexafluoroacetone as a byproduct. The resulting product, 1,1,1-trichloro-3,3,3-trifluoro-2-(trifluoromethyl)-2-propanol (CTFE), can be used to produce polymers that are resistant to heat and weathering. CTFE polymerization is initiated using an organic peroxide such as benzoyl peroxide or cumene hydroperoxide in the presence of triethylamine and dimethylformamide. These reactions produce acrylic acid and acetonitrile as byproducts. Acrylic acid is then coupled with another molecule containing an active hydrogen atom to produce a polymer
