Spiro[3.5]nonane-1,3-dione is a replacement for the imidazopyridine (e.g., clonidine) that binds to the α2-adrenergic receptor on the surface of cells in the central nervous system and blocks the binding of noradrenaline and adrenaline, thereby reducing blood pressure. Spiro[3.5]nonane-1,3-dione also acts as an antagonist at the β1 adrenergic receptor, which is involved in regulating heart rate and contractility. It has been shown that spiro[3.5]nonane-1,3-dione is able to inhibit integrin from binding to its ligand with high affinity and selectivity.
