Unoprostone is a synthetic analogue of the natural prostaglandin PGF2α. It is an agonist of the EP2 receptor and is used for the treatment of chronic dry eye syndrome and glaucoma. Unoprostone is also used in ophthalmic preparations as a preservative against bacterial contamination, and its antimicrobial activity has been demonstrated in a model system by preventing the growth of bacteria such as Staphylococcus epidermidis. The chemical stability and biological properties of unoprostone are constant over a wide range of pH, ionic strength, and temperature. Unoprostone has been shown to be effective against dorzolamide hydrochloride-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) but not methicillin-resistant strains.
