Undecyl cyanide is a chemical compound that is used as a catalyst in the production of polyurethane. It can be classified as an organocatalyst since it contains both organic and inorganic elements. Undecyl cyanide is produced by reacting trifluoroacetic acid with hydrogen fluoride, hydrochloric acid, and nitrogen atoms at high temperatures. At room temperature, undecyl cyanide exists in the form of microcapsules. This reaction mechanism for the synthesis of undecyl cyanide is not well understood but it has been shown to involve copper chromite and control agents such as halides or hydroxyl groups. The product does not contain amines or nonpolar solvents and its reactivity with amides and fatty acids is unknown.
