Umbelliferone-3-carboxylic acid is a reactive fluorescent probe that can be used to study the transfer reactions of disulfide bonds. It has a basic structure and biological properties similar to coumarin derivatives, and can be used as a fluorescent probe for studying protein folding and transfer reactions. In addition, Umbelliferone-3-carboxylic acid has been shown to react with human serum and form the reactive species 4-hydroxycinnamic acid. This reactive species reacts with DNA bases to form covalent adducts, which can be detected using fluorescence spectroscopy. Umbelliferone-3-carboxylic acid has also been shown to inhibit the growth of K562 cells in culture by binding covalently to DNA. The reactive species 4-hydroxycinnamic acid inhibits DNA replication by inhibiting rna synthesis.
