Urotensin II is a cyclic peptide that is biosynthesized in the brain and has vasoconstrictor activity. It is produced by the cleavage of a larger protein, urotensin I. The N-terminal region of urotensin II contains the amino acid sequence Cys-Cys-Xaa-Cys-Cys, which can be substituted with other amino acids to produce a variety of analogs. Urotensin II has been shown to have biological activity in mammals, as well as cysteine residues that can be acetylated. The molecule also contains a disulfide bridge near the C-terminus, which may allow for further modifications or substitutions to occur.
