Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a polypeptide that belongs to the group of angiogenic factors and is involved in the regulation of vascular permeability, vasodilation, and blood vessel formation. VEGF has been shown to be involved in the progression of periodontitis, as well as in the development and maintenance of the periodontal tissues. It has also been implicated in collagen synthesis, wound healing and tumorigenesis. VEGF is regulated by a number of receptor activities, including c-Met receptor tyrosine kinase activity, which is responsible for binding to VEGF ligands and initiating signal transduction pathways. Blockade of this receptor leads to a reduction in tumor size or inhibition of tumor growth.
