Vanadium oxide is a chemical compound that consists of vanadium and oxygen. It has a black powder-like appearance and is chemically stable, thermodynamically stable, and non-toxic. Vanadium oxide is also resistant to corrosion from most acids and alkalies. This compound is used in the production of steel alloys, as an additive to strengthen glass, in the manufacture of paints, coatings, and adhesives, for producing high-temperature ceramics such as zirconia and mullite, in the manufacturing of capacitors for electric circuits (because it has a high dielectric constant), and as an electrode material in fuel cells. Vanadium oxide reacts with phosphorus pentoxide to produce vanadyl pentoxide (VO2) which can be reduced to vanadium metal in the reaction with hydrogen gas. The reaction mechanism for this process involves three stages:
1) formation of VO2 by oxidation of V4+;
