3-Vinylbenzaldehyde is an aldehyde that can be used in the treatment of cervical cancer. This compound is formed after UV irradiation of linear polymers and polymer films. The polymer film is prepared by covalent attachment of 3-vinylbenzaldehyde to polystyrene. This compound has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of MRC-5 cells and to induce apoptosis through the production of hydrogen peroxide from the release of hippuric acid. 3-Vinylbenzaldehyde also has a high detection sensitivity for cancer, with a linear response over a range of concentrations from 10 μM to 1 mM. The presence of aldehyde groups on the molecule allows it to form coordination complexes with metal cations, which in turn makes it an effective inhibitor for cancer cells.
