2-Vinylfuran is a reactive, kinetic compound that has the chemical formula of C6H4(COOH)2. 2-Vinylfuran can be synthesized by reacting furfuryl acetate with mercaptoacetic acid in the presence of palladium complexes. 2-Vinyl furan is an ester compound that can be used in cationic polymerization reactions. The FTIR spectroscopy studies show that 2-vinyl furan has a strong absorption band at 1710 cm-1 due to the carbonyl group and a weak absorption band at 2900 cm-1 due to the vinyl group.
2-Vinyl furan has been studied for its use as a potential low energy electron acceptor for fuel cells.
