Vancomycin Impurity D is a glycopeptide that belongs to the class of amides. It is commercially prepared by the reaction of vancomycin hydrochloride with an alkylsulfonyl chloride. Vancomycin Impurity D has been shown to have potent antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium perfringens, although it is not active against acid-fast bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex. It is used for the treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection in patients who are not responding to other antibiotics. This drug binds to penicillin-binding proteins on the surface of bacterial cells by hydrophilic interaction chromatography, inhibiting cell wall synthesis and protein synthesis.
