Voriconazole N-oxide is a metabolite of voriconazole, an inhibitor of the cytochrome P450 enzyme. It is used in human liver and other tissues to inhibit the activity of p450 enzymes. Voriconazole N-oxide has been shown to be active against a wide range of bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections. The n-oxide form of voriconazole has been shown to have higher potency than the parent drug in some cases, but less so in others. In one study, voriconazole N-oxide was found to be more effective at inhibiting oxidative DNA damage than voriconazole. This is due to its ability to react with dioxygen in a noncompetitive manner.
