Menaquinone is a vitamin K inhibitor that can be found in plants, fungi, and bacteria. It is used as an antimicrobial agent in the treatment of hepatic steatosis and has been shown to have beneficial effects on experimental models of human osteosarcoma. The optimum concentration of menaquinone for inhibiting growth was found to be 0.025% (w/v) with an IC50 value of 2.5 µg/mL. Menaquinone also showed synergistic effects when used in combination therapy with other drugs against the cancer cells tested. The potential drug target for menaquinone is the vitamin K cycle, which plays a role in regulating cell proliferation and apoptosis.
