Vanadium(III) chloride is a compound that has been used in the past as an oxidation catalyst and in the preparation of other vanadium compounds. It is used to prepare hydroxyl groups and hydrochloric acid, which are key intermediates in organic synthesis. Vanadium(III) chloride has also been used to produce boron nitride nanotubes with a redox potential of 0.7 V and light emission at 550 nm. The activation energies for this process have been determined through spectroscopic measurements, which show that the electron transfer reaction takes place on the surface of boron nitride nanotubes. This material can be used as an alternative to tungsten carbide or molybdenum carbide for use in diode lasers. Vanadium(III) chloride can also be found in human blood serum and cell culture media, where it serves as a reducing agent to maintain cell viability.
