Z-Val-Ala-OH is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed to Z-Val and Ala in vivo. It has antiviral properties against HIV and has been shown to be effective in vitro against other viruses, such as West Nile Virus. Z-Val-Ala-OH binds to the enzyme ribonuclease H (RNH) which breaks down RNA. This binding prevents the breakdown of viral RNA, preventing replication of the virus. The prodrug also inhibits the activity of another enzyme called aminopeptidase, which is required for processing peptides into amino acids.
