Wright's stain is a differential stain that is used in the clinical pathology laboratory to identify bacteria. It is composed of two parts: (1) a water-soluble dye called safranin, which stains the cytoplasm and cell walls of gram-negative bacteria pink; and (2) a water-insoluble dye called eosin, which stains the cytoplasm and cell walls of gram-positive bacteria red. Wright's stain can be used to identify bacterial infections by identifying the type of bacteria present in a patient's sample. Wright's stain is also used to detect H.I.V., which causes AIDS, by identifying dna binding activity in infected cells. It is not effective for diagnosis of other infectious diseases because it does not bind with the dna of some viruses or fungi.
