Warfarin is a drug that belongs to the class of vitamin K antagonists. It is used to prevent blood clotting, and it is also used in the treatment of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Warfarin inhibits the action of cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) in humans by competitively binding to the active site, which leads to reduced synthesis of clotting factors II, VII, IX, and X. Warfarin has been shown to have significant interactions with other drugs that are metabolized by CYP2C9 such as diazepam, phenytoin, carbamazepine and omeprazole. The half-life of warfarin may be increased or decreased depending on whether these drugs are administered concurrently with warfarin.
