Description:

Xanthene-9-carboxylic acid (XCA) is a molecule that is derived from the amino acid tryptophan. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of protein kinase A, which is an enzyme that regulates the production of cyclic AMP (cAMP). The chemical structure of XCA contains a hydroxy group, a carboxylate, and a proton on the propantheline ring. This compound has been shown to have pharmacokinetic properties in rats and humans. XCA is excreted in urine as unchanged drug and metabolites, with hydroxylation by cytochrome P450 enzymes being rate-limiting for its metabolism. XCA also has an ampk activator effect, which can be seen in cells treated with adenosine monophosphate or phosphoramidon.
