Zopolrestat is an inhibitor molecule that inhibits the activity of the enzyme sorbitol dehydrogenase. It is used to treat diabetes mellitus, and its hypoglycemic effect is due to its ability to inhibit the release of glucose from liver glycogen. Sorbitol is a sugar that accumulates in diabetes mellitus, which can cause oxidative injury to cells. The drug has been shown to suppress this oxidative injury by inhibiting the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and preventing lipid peroxidation. Zopolrestat also activates growth factor-β1, which stimulates cell proliferation and regeneration in injured tissue. This drug has been shown to have cytosolic calcium-binding properties, which may contribute to its effects on cell proliferation and differentiation.
