Zinc nitrate hexahydrate is a chemical that can be used as an antimicrobial agent in wastewater treatment. It has a high chemical stability and is resistant to temperature, pH, and corrosion. Zinc nitrate hexahydrate has been shown to be effective in the removal of nitrite ion from wastewater and can also be used to remove hydrogen fluoride from wastewater. It is also used as an additive in water vapor generators, which are most commonly used for air conditioning systems. The optimum concentration of zinc nitrate hexahydrate for removing nitrates from wastewater ranges from 1-2 mg/L. The reaction solution can be made by adding sodium citrate to water and then adding zinc nitrate hexahydrate until the desired concentration is reached. Zinc nitrate hexahydrate reacts with sodium citrate to form zinc citrate dihydrogen phosphate, which precipitates out of solution as zinc phosphate.
