Zolpidem is a drug that belongs to the class of benzodiazepines. It is used to treat insomnia and other sleep-related disorders. Zolpidem affects chemicals in the brain that may be unbalanced in people with insomnia, helping you to fall asleep or stay asleep through the night. Zolpidem 6-carboxylic acid is a metabolite of zolpidem, which is formed by cytochrome P450 3A4 enzyme activity. The concentrations of this metabolite are increased in urine samples following administration of zolpidem. This metabolite can be detected by mass spectrometry and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) methods. The MALDI method was found to be more sensitive than the mass spectrometric method for detection of zolpidem 6-carboxylic acid.
