Zonisamide is a drug that is used to treat epilepsy and prevent seizures. It has been found to be neuroprotective against glutamate-induced excitotoxicity in granule cells and modulating the uptake of glutamate into synaptic vesicles. Zonisamide also blocks voltage-gated sodium channels, inhibiting the release of glutamate from nerve terminals and decreasing the firing rate of neurons. This drug may also have growth factor activity, as it has been shown to stimulate neurite outgrowth in cultured rat brain cells.
