It inhibits the activity of cysteine-type aspartyl proteases, which are enzymes that break down proteins. Zinc ditetrafluoroborate hexahydrate has been shown to inhibit the growth of infectious bacteria, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae. Zinc ditetrafluoroborate hexahydrate may also be used as an adjuvant in vaccines, as well as a sealant in chemical processing. The zinc ditetrafluoroborate hexahydrate particles have low detection limits and can be manufactured into fabricating materials for clothing or other products.
