1-Cyclohexyl-2-hydroxyethanone (1CH2OHE) is an esterase inhibitor. It inhibits the hydrolysis of esters by enzymes called esterases, which are found in many different types of cells. 1CH2OHE can be used as a catalyst to promote the Friedel-Crafts reaction between phenetole and aluminium. This reaction produces alkyl ketones such as methyl ketones, which are used in the synthesis of dyes, perfumes, and plastics. The copper chromite catalyzed hydrogenation of 1CH2OHE can produce branched chain hydrocarbons that are useful for making polymers and lubricants. The chloride ion can be used to neutralize 1CH2OHE so it is not corrosive.
