2-Oxo-2-(2-thienyl)acetonitrile is a quaternary ammonium salt that is used as a catalyst in organic synthesis. It is an effective catalyst for the conversion of cyanohydrins to esters, and can also catalyze the hydrolysis of carboxylic acid to yield alkanes and carboxylic acids. 2-Oxo-2-(2-thienyl)acetonitrile can be synthesized by reacting thiophene with chloride, followed by hydrolyzing the resulting cyanide salts. This compound has stereocenter and two chiral centers on the sulfur atom, which allows it to form four different compounds. The yields of these compounds depend on the conditions used in their synthesis.
