D-homocystine is a human monocyte deaminase inhibitor. It has been shown to inhibit the enzymatic reaction of homocysteine to cystathionine in lung fibroblasts and tissue culture. This inhibition leads to an increase in intracellular levels of homocysteine and subsequently higher concentrations of homocysteine in serum, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid. D-homocystine inhibits chemotaxis of faecalis cells by interfering with the binding between chemoattractant (e.g., fMLP) and receptor molecules on the surface of these cells. It also inhibits trichloroacetic acid-induced DNA methylation in leukemia cells through its ability to interact with divalent metal ions that are essential for methyl transfer reactions.
