4-Benzenesulfonyl-butyric acid is an antibacterial agent that is a cyclic dipeptide. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to chloride ions, which are required for bacterial cell wall biosynthesis. 4-Benzenesulfonyl-butyric acid also inhibits the production of gephyrotoxin in muscle cells, which may be due to its stereoselective inhibition of imine reduction. This drug has been found in plants and plant sources such as Piper species and Butanoic Acid, which may indicate that it can be synthesized from natural sources. The alkyl substituents on the side chain have been shown to affect antibacterial activity.
